Poaching Elk continues to be a problem in the area according to the Northwestern Ontario Elk Restoration Coalition.
Co-Chair Murray English says 18 elk have been poached and at least 12 more appear to have been illegally killed.
English says they are stepping up their defense in protecting the remaining elk.
The group is hiring a full time conservation officer and posting species identification signs to help stop poaching.
English estimates there are at least 70 animals left in the region.
