The Dryden Police Service is hoping to work with hospital officials and the North West Local Health Integration Network to address a growing concern.
The Service is worried officer time is being taken up by providing security when a mental health patient is being treated at hospital.
Acting Chief Derek West says this isn’t a Dryden issue as it’s a trend across Ontario and Canada.
West says providing security takes officers away from more urgent calls or foot patrol and notes they need to find a solution.
There are reports officers at times are spending hours at the hospital.
The Police Board has been asked to bring up the issue with the new Chair of the Hospital Board Sandra Boyko.
Some on the Board are suggesting the hospital could be providing their own security as is carried out in most larger centres.
West stresses all of those involved have the same goals; ensuring public safety and public health.
