Premier Kathleen Wynne says it could take several years to complete the twinning of the Trans-Canada Highway between Kenora and the Ontario/Manitoba boundary.
Ministry of Transportation documents show the double-laning won’t be complete until after 2021 and Wynne doesn’t think the project can be fast-tracked.
Wynne notes work remains on the corridor and environmental assessments, calling it a big job project.
She says she wants to move ahead knowing the project will create local jobs.
Wynne says she spoke to the Chief of both Shoal Lake #39 and #40 First Nation’s on Wednesday and says they will continue to talk so they can move the project forward.
She calls that section of Highway 17 a dangerous section of road and says the twinning remains a priority.
