A Red Lake teacher has been recognized for his 30-plus years of work in the community and at St. John’s Catholic School.
Tom Doherty has received the Ontario Ophea award for exemplary contributions to the lives of children and youth in the areas of health, physical education and promotion, advocacy and community development.
Doherty calls it a tremendous honour.
It says it gives him more sense of pride because it recognizes his career but also the things he does within the community.
Doherty says being involved in coaching allows him to be a better teacher as he gets to see the overall impact of what physical education has on students.
He stresses this award goes out to all teachers who dedicate their time to students and their home community.
Doherty says if we look at all of our communities, a lot of teachers have that expertise within the classroom, are giving that expertise back to the community.
Tom Doherty will be featured Sunday on Northwest Monitor following the 9:00am News on CKDR.
