Progress Made on Sewer System

Atikokan has won a round in the on-going fight with the Province over
the Town’s sewer system and the practice of diverting sewage in the Atikokan
River.
The Environmental Review Tribunal has told the Town that an elaborate
plan to manage the system is not needed and all hearings that were scheduled
for this year have been cancelled.
The Town and the Province have been locked in a court battle after
the Government stated the practice of diverting sewage into the Atikokan
River was unacceptable and must be corrected.
Atikokan has always wondered why the strict environmental rules were
never enforced when the Province ran the Town’s sewer system.
Brown says the Town is now working with the Government to draft
short-term and long-term solutions to there sewage troubles.
