Proposed Pipeline Drawing Interest

TransCanada is calling it the biggest capital expenditure in company history.
The project is a $12-billion west to east pipeline that will bring Alberta oil to the Irving Refinery in Saint John, New Brunswick.
Company President Russ Girling says they are going to increase the capacity from 850,000 barrels of oil a day to over 1.1-million barrels a day.
Girling says the project will create thousands of jobs and economic spin-offs for communities along the line.
The pipeline proposal will use existing TransCanada pipe through northwestern Ontario to Quebec City with construction of a new leg from there to Saint John.
It still must receive regulatory approval.
The company is expecting to complete the Quebec to Saint John portion by 2018.
It didn’t take long for opposition to form against plans for the new pipeline.
The left-leaning Council of Canadians is launching a national campaign to stop the project.
Chair Maude Barlow says the pipeline will threaten communities along the route.
Greenpeace says every community along the proposed route should worry, given the industry’s poor record for ruptures and spills.
TransCanada’s Russ Girling says the project will reduce our dependence on foreign oil and will meet all environmental standards.
