Today is the last day of Pet Safety Week, but the Second Chance Pet Network continues to offer safety tips.
Volunteer Silvia Scheibler says the cold weather affects your pets too! If it’s too cold to go outside without a sweater or jacket, it’s probably too cold for your pet too.
Other tips include:
– don’t give them human medicine, as one Tylenol is enough to kill a cat
– always wipe your pet’s paws if they have been outside where there is ice-melting salt
– check between their toes for snow-balls
– if your pet has to stay outside for a period of time, make sure to provide them with extra food and water
– and make sure the bowls are plastic
– keep all decorations out of your pet’s reach
– make sure they have an identification tag
– don’t leave them waiting in the car when it’s very cold out, as the vehicle will act as a refrigerator
– choose your plants carefully, and make sure they aren’t poisonous
– if you have a doghouse outside, make sure it is insulated and a couple of inches off of the ground
– keep antifreeze away, as it has a “sweet” taste that pets may want to try
