The Dryden Police Service has some reminders as this is National Crime Prevention Week.
Constable Kevin Hildebrand stopped by the CKDR newsroom this afternoon with his co-op student Leia Ray, and says one of the categories is “Protecting Yourself”.
Some safety tips include:
– don’t leave keys hidden in obvious places outside
– when in public, always be aware of your surroundings
– be mindful of people loitering or acting suspiciously
– if you live alone, only use first initials with your surname on mailboxes, directories or phone books
– arrange a system so that someone has a key to your home and is aware of your whereabouts at all times, especially if you live alone
When protecting your children, remember:
– have them tell you where they are at all times
– tell them, their schools and their day care provider where to reach you in an emergency
– tell them to go directly to a cashier or information booth if they become separated from you in a public area
– if they are home alone, to not answer the door, or if they are on the phone, not to say they are home alone
In order to protect your vehicle and home:
– keep a lived-in look when you are away
– have newspapers picked up, lawns cut or snow removed
– store valuables in a safety deposit box
– install smoke alarms and test them monthly
– plan and practice an escape route with all family members
– don’t put your name or address on your house or vehicle keys, and keep them on separate rings
– always check the interior and under the vehicle before entering, especially at night
– if you are going to be away overnight for an extended period of time, use automatic timers to turn lights on and off.
