The Thunder Bay Generating Station will be converted from burning coal to burning advanced biomass as a fuel for creating electricity.
The announcement was made today in Thunder Bay.
Over the next year, the plant will stop using coal and will instead be converted to use forest or agricultural sources for fuel to allow for electricity generation.
Northern Development and Mines Minister Michael Gravelle says this will allow for further development in the region and will help provide energy to the mining sector.
Gravelle says the facility will be a global leader and is one-of-the kind in the world.
Work to convert the plant will begin in 2014 and the project is expected to be completed by 2015.
A previous plan to convert the station to natural gas was cancelled a year ago by Ontario Power Generation, putting into question the plant’s future.
