The provincial government is giving local municipal councils until January 22nd to tell them if they want a cannabis store in their community.
That will be about six weeks after most newly-elected councils are sworn into office.
Attorney General Caroline Mulroney says there will also be no limit as to the number of stores that can set up, for now.
However, Mulroney notes they will be working with municipalities on possible changes.
Legislation will also give powers to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission to oversee the pot stores.
Rules for smoking marijuana will also be the same as other tobacco products, making it illegal in places where smoking is now prohibited.
Retail sale of pot in the province won’t happen until next April.
