Province Pledges Support For Indigenous Education

New degree and diploma programs may soon be available through the Seven Generations Education Institute in northwestern Ontario.

The provincial government is making it possible through the creation of an Indigenous council to help oversee programs at all nine Ontario Indigenous post-secondary institutions.

Mitangigaming First Nation Chief Janice Henderson says the move allows students to learn closer to home.

The Liberals are providing $56-million in funding to expand programming.

Ontario Regional Chief Isadore Day says the provincial legislation will give Indigenous post-second institutions more control over student learning, stressing it will help aboriginal students flourish and grow.

Day says the move recognizes the need for more jurisdictional control.

Advanced Education Minister Deb Matthews says Indigenous institutes are a unique and complementary pillar of Ontario’s post-secondary education system. (File Photo)
