The provincial government plans to spend $7.8-million to promote the use of wood to construct taller buildings.
Thunder Bay-Rainy River MPP Bill Mauro says they are providing the funding for education, research and construction under their “mass timber” program.
The Minister of Municipal Affairs says they will assist architects, engineers, as well as building and fire officials in the development of safe, alternative solutions for the use of wood in buildings taller than six stories.
Mauro says they have also partnered with the federal government to test the performance of mass timber building systems.
Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry Nathalie Des Rosiers says it’s one way to support the forest industry in northern Ontario.
Des Rosiers says the investment will lead to new jobs in the forest sector as well as construction.
