Finance Minister Charles Sousa says he’s told his officials to review several decisions by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation.
Sousa says he wants to make sure the right thing is being done and the impacts won’t be negative for affected communities.
NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says immediate action is needed to protect northern communities from costly property tax assessments on local mills.
Horwath says Dryden and Espanola are just two communities that could be crippled.
Dryden has been forced to find $1-million in savings and issue several pink slips because of the assessment, while Espanola warns it will have to raise taxes by 50% in order to cover the Domtar Mill assessment.
