The provincial government is ending the Drive Clean program.
The mandatory emission tests on vehicles seven years old or greater had been in place since 1999.
Premier Doug Ford says it’s outlived its usefulness.
Ford says cancelling the program will save the province $40-million annually.
He notes a new program will come into play focusing on the emissions of commercial transport trucks and other heavy duty vehicles instead.
Environment Minister Rod Phillips says on-road emissions have declined steeply and are no longer the biggest contributor to smog.
He says strict manufacturing standards on cars and requirements for cleaner gasoline have changed things.
The program will officially come to an end next April.
