Ontario’s new Community Safety and Correctional Services Minister is asking for more time to respond to a letter from the Nishnawbe Aski Nation about police funding.
A letter was sent on November 3rd asking the Ford government to honour a tri-partite agreement with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service.
Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa says they had expected a response on Tuesday.
Mamakwa says the province still owes $4-million for its part of the deal that was signed by the previous Liberal government and the Feds.
The NDP members calls this a serious breach in payment.
In the Legislature, Mamakwa questioned Premier Doug Ford if he doesn’t believe First Nations in northern Ontario communities deserve police services that meet other police standards.
He stresses without adequate funding, the government is putting children, families and communities in the Far North at risk.
The new Community Safety and Correctional Services Minister Sylvia Jones admits she’s just getting up to speed on her new portfolio and asked for more time to assess and review the issue.
