Provincial Government Under Fire For Not Helping Mining Industry

The opposition is taking aim at Northern Development and Mines Minister Michael Gravelle on mining operations in the province.

PC critic Norm Miller says the amount of red tape to get a mine up and running is mind-boggling.

Miller says it takes too long for companies to get permits to set up their mines, and if they do, they are confronted with some of the highest electricity prices in North America.

He says Noront Resources had to wait 2-and-a-half years just to have their Terms of Reference approved for the Ring of Fire.

Miller adds it takes at least 110-permits to open a mine in Ontario.

NDP critic Michael Mantha adds the cost of doing business in the province is forcing mining companies to seek out cheaper jurisdictions.
