Public Board Eyes Location For New School

The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board is focusing on building a new high school on the Sioux Mountain Public School site in Sioux Lookout.
The board was looking at the current Queen Elizabeth site as a possible location but Sioux Mountain has many benefits according to Board officials.
Director of Education Sean Monteith says the benefits include having access to the golf course, curling club and tennis courts for outdoor education.
Monteith says students at Sioux Mountain would have access to programs such as fine arts, hospitality and music programs.
He adds other benefits to building on Sioux Mountain are that the Board owns the property and it’s zoned properly, it doesn’t have to be acquired through a purchase and the Board knows what they are building on.
The next step is testing the soil on Sioux mountain to determine if the ground is good to build on.
Monteith notes no final decision has been made but they hope to have the site picked before the snow falls.
Public consultations are expected to begin September 29th.
