Public School Board Looking At Technology Opportunities

Taking advantage of untapped technology and opportunities.

That’s what the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board is hoping to do with the release of a new Learning Technologies Strategic Plan.

Superintendent of Education Tania Sterling says the four year strategy looks at how schools can better utilize technology in the classroom as well as identify existing gaps.

The Board consulted with parents, staff, students and partners to ensure they are headed in the right direction in an ever-changing learning environment.

Sterling says they looked at local needs but notes they also networked with educators and school boards across the province.

She notes a survey conducted last month had 1,300 responses, with feedback received on current technology being used as well as gaps in the system.

Sterling says the board feels that technology, when used responsibly and creatively, has the potential to truly make teaching and learning boundless.

She adds a number of questions were asked and from there they developed a number of priorities in the plan.

-Creating a shared vision with input from stakeholders.

-Continuing to gather students and stakeholder voice.

-Building capacity in future leaders.

-Ensuring all KPDSB students are aware of appropriate use of digital learning tools and online networks to ensure safety. (Digital Citizenship)

-Making virtual learning environments across all curriculum areas available for students.

-Making makerspaces available for all students.

-Offering Kindergarten to Grade 12 robotics and coding program in all schools.

-Making augmented/virtual reality available for students in grades 4-12.
