A new mental health program has been launched at Kenora Catholic District school’s, including St. John in Red Lake.
It’s called “Friends” and aims to give students some of the tools they need to cope with stressful or difficult situations.
Mental Health lead Sue Devlin says the program is for kids of all ages and is a partnership with the Northwestern Health Unit.
Devlin says the initiative teaches students resilience skills to cope with challenging times as well as ways to self-regulate or self-sooth when they are experiencing big feelings.
She says after ten sessions, they have already seen signs of progress, noting kids are using the skills that they have learned.
Devlin says the initiative is being used in several jurisdictions both in southern Ontario and globally with good success.
