The Keewatin Patricia District School Board has released its 2018-2019 Special Education Plan.
The strategy will guide the work of schools and the board in terms of supporting and enhancing special education services.
Superintendent of Human Resources and Special Education Joan Kantola says it fits in with their overall plan.
Kantola says all students in their schools, regardless of their background or ability, will have the opportunity to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge required to live up to their full potential.
She says areas of focus include providing a range of placement options for students, respecting differences and diversity, providing programs and services in the student’s home school wherever possible, providing appropriate accommodations and modifications where required and programming a focus on inclusive practices in schools.
Kantola adds the board has comprehensively developed individual education plans for students with special needs which focus on improved student outcomes.
Kantola says the plan also includes an exclusive focus on student mental health and well-being.
She stresses they will ensure that all students, who may be struggling with some lower level to more extreme and early signs of mental health concerns, are well supported by special education staff as well as all school staff.
Kantola says most of the plan is provincially mandated but notes they have gone one step farther to help support those with special needs.
