November is National Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.
Northwest Manager of the Canadian Cancer Society Maria Cabral says unfortunately, pancreatic cancer has a high mortality rate.
She says roughly 4,700 Canadians will be diagnosed this year, and 4,300 of those people will die from it.
Smoking tobacco products, obesity and diabetes can increase your likelihood of getting the cancer significantly. Genetics may also play a factor.
However, Cabral says there are many things people can do to prevent the chance of developing pancreatic cancer. This includes quitting smoking, exercising regularly and eating healthy.
Cabral points out that pancreatic cancer is not as well known as some of the other cancers such as breast cancer. As a result, they will be focusing on designating a lot of research dollars to pancreatic cancer and other little-known cancers as a part of their strategic plan.
You can also make a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society specifically for pancreatic cancer.
