Ontario’s NDP is calling for the government to do more to help at-risk youth.
Children and Youth Services critic Monique Taylor is bringing the attention of an October, 2016 suicide of an Indigenous girl in Sioux Lookout.
15-year-old Kanina Sue Turtle took her own life while in the care of child and family services.
Taylor says the teen recorded her own death and it shows that she was left alone in the back room of a home for 45-minutes before anyone came to check on her.
She adds another video shows that Kanina Sue Turtle tried to kill herself the day before in the bush.
Taylor stresses in both cases, no one came to the aid of the troubled youth.
Taylor notes the girls parents didn’t see the videos until after they picked up her belongings and they have been left in the dark as they try to get the truth.
Children and Youth Services Minister Michael Coteau says the government is actively working with Indigenous communities to address a growing suicide epidemic in the north.
Coteau says there is a need to develop culturally appropriate programming to help at-risk youth.
