Questions Raised On Selection Of New OPP Commissioner

The PC government is defending its selection of the new Commissioner of the Provincial Police.

72-year-old Ron Taverner is a 50-year veteran of the Toronto Police Service.

Sylvia Jones is the Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services and says the pick is getting the support of front-line officers.

Jones says Taverner is known as a “hard worker, progressive and a dedicated officer”.

She adds the selection was made by an independent commission, and calls it an excellent choice.

Former Commissioner Chris Lewis suggests the selection was made by the Premier and calls it a travesty.

Lewis says he shocked by the appointment and calls it a kick to the OPP and its senior officers.
