In the province, Northwestern Ontario has the third highest lung cancer deaths attributed to radon gas.
Radon gas has no colour, smell or taste and it’s released from the ground and the water into the air.
Northwestern Health Unit Health Inspector Rick Pascoe says the gas can seep through the cracks in the foundation of your home.
Pascoe says you can develop lung cancer by being exposed to radon gas over a long period of time.
He says approximately 24% of lung cancer deaths in the region are due to radon gas.
Pascoe says for smokers who are exposed to the gas their chances of developing lung cancer are 1 in 3, smokers who are not exposed to the gas have a 1 in 10 chance and non smokers who are exposed to the gas have a 1 in 20 chance.
Pascoe says people are not aware that there may be radon gas in their home.
He adds the NWHU is strongly recommending people buy a radon gas test kit.
