Rainy in the Rainy River District

More than 60 millimetres of rain (or two and a half inches) has fallen in the past 24 hours in the Fort Frances area prompting town officials to take action.

Fire Chief Steve Richardson, who acts as emergency measures coordinator, is asking town residents to reduce water consumption and to ensure sump pumps are in summer mode.

The town’s sewage treatment plant is currently in bypass mode with wastewater being discharged into Rainy River.

The Ministry of the Environment has been notified and the wastewater discharge is within provincial guidelines.

Meantime, a number of road closures are also in place due to flooding, west of Fort Frances.

Several rural roads in neighbouring Alberton and La Vallee Townships are closed due to high water and even washouts.
