Red Lake Artist Finalist For National Award

For the second time, Artist Cheryl Wilson-Smith of Red Lake is a finalist for the Salt Spring National Art Prize.

Her piece titled “Granite and Lichen” uses glass and cement and depicts strong hints of the Boreal Forest.

Wilson-Smith she got the inspiration from a piece of granite she walks by everyday that has orange lichen growing on the side.

She says she was stunned, honoured and excited by the news.

Wilson-Smith is one of 50 finalists and is eligible to win one of eight awards totaling $30,000.

The winners of the national competition will be announced on October 21st at a Gala Awards Night.

Wilson-Smith attended Salt Spring in 2015 and she fell in love with artists in attendance.

She called the visit an amazing experience.
