The Ontario Energy Board has granted Union Gas approval to construct a 100-kilometre natural gas pipeline to the Red Lake District.
The board approved a municipal franchise for the Municipality of Red Lake and for Union to serve customers in the Red Lake area.
Construction is planned in two phases.
The first phase is about 58-kilometres of pipeline primarily along Highway 105 and 125.
That will service Goldcorp mine sites in Balmertown and Cochenour and the project is expected to start this week.
The second phase is about 42-kilometre s of pipeline to serve residents and businesses in the Red Lake area.
The timing of construction for that project is dependent on funding.
