Red Lake will be the site of research studying how photosynthesis increases the amount of oxygen on earth.
The work will be carried out by Lakehead University professor Dr. Philip Fralick.
He has received $3-million from the European Research Council to conduct the research.
Fralick says much of the research will be done in rock dating back three billion years.
He notes research points out that primitive photosynthesizing organisms contributed to adding oxygen to the earth.
