Women across northwestern Ontario are being encouraged to get screened for breast cancer Friday as part of a one-day screening marathon called “Mammothon”.
Tarja Heiskanen is the Manager of Screening and Assessment Services for the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and she says last year 134-females across the region took part in the campaign.
Heiskanen says women, between the ages of 50 and 74 years, should be screened for breast cancer every two years with a mammogram.
She stresses the importance of getting checked. Currently, only 62.6% of eligible women in our region are up-to-date with their cancer screening.
The provincial average is 70%.
The “Mammothon” is being held in Sioux Lookout, Kenora and Thunder Bay. Pre-booked and walk-in appointments will be available at the Meno-Ya-Win Health Centre between 8:30am-8:00pm. To book call 1-800-461-7031 Here is the completed Friday schedule.
