The Nishnawbe Aski Nation is mourning the loss of four NAN youth in provincial government care in the past six months.
The latest tragedy occurred Monday, when the body of 17-year-old Tammy Keeash from Weagamow First Nation was located in the Neebing McIntyre floodway in Thunder Bay.
NAN officials stress they are heartbroken and shocked with the recent deaths and are demanding action.
They are calling for an immediate provincial probe and for the government to make legislative changes so inquests are mandatory for all youth who die in group home settings.
NAN adds its disappointed the Coroner’s Office has not yet responded to their call for an inquest, stressing “how many children do we have to lose before action is taken?”
