Regional COVID-19 Update

The Northwestern Health Unit will be monitoring COVID-19 numbers in our region, following Thanksgiving weekend and the Kenora outbreak.

Medical Officer of Health Doctor Kit Young Hoon goes over the latest numbers.

“We have 68 total positive cases since March. Currently there are five active cases, two in the Dryden/Red Lake area, one in the Kenora area and two in the Sioux Lookout area.”

There was one new case reported in the Dryden/Red Lake area over the Thanksgiving weekend.

Young Hoon says with no additional cases in Kenora, it suggests that public health measures are working in reducing the transmission of COVID-19.

“So far we haven’t seen anymore positive cases from the Kenora cluster, however there are a few more tests to come in this week from those who got tested late last week.”

It will likely be the end of the week before it’s known if there was any community spread from the nine cases in Kenora earlier this month.

Young Hoon stresses those who are symptomatic should get tested.

“Being tested or getting test results quickly toes not protect you against COVID-19. What does protect you is practicing preventative measures. The virus will have limited spread if we all do our part.”

The health unit continues to recommend preventative measures such as wearing a mask in enclosed public spaces, hand washing and staying 6 feet a part from those not in your household.
