Regional University Losing 150 Saudi Students

A dispute between the Canadian and Saudi Arabian governments is hitting close to home.

Lakehead University in Thunder Bay will be losing up to 150 students as the Saudi government has ordered their students on scholarships to find education outside our country.

The move is a result of a diplomatic and economic spat between the Canadian and Saudi governments over human rights concerns.

School official James Aldridge says they will be hit hard financially as a result of the order to leave.

Aldridge says students are understandably shocked but they are doing everything possible to help in their transition.

He says they are answering questions, helping with logistics of moving and ordering transcripts that students will need for future education.

A new semester is only one month away and Aldridge notes some students from Saudi Arabia are already in Thunder Bay.

He calls the dispute “frustrating for everyone locally”, noting their students will be missed.
