Report 3 Of 4 On Nuclear Waste Proposal

This week CKDR News looks into a proposal to store nuclear waste in northwestern Ontario.
Ear Falls and Ignace are two communities that have expressed an interest.
Reporter Shannon Gwynne was in Toronto on a fact-finding mission and she had a chance to tour the Darlington Nuclear Facility and speak with members of Nuclear Waste Management of Ontario.
Gwynne files her third report.

“Safety and security are concerns when looking at where to store used nuclear fuel, but so is the environment.
The Nuclear Waste Management Organization is looking for a community to host a deep geological repository, and Ear Falls and Ignace are two of the 21-communities interested in learning about it.
NWMO Communications Manager Mike Krizank says they are looking for a community that is not close to a mine, because it wouldn’t be suitable for the repository.
Krizank says they aren’t looking to set up on fractured rock.
Krizank says the fuel would be 500-metres below ground and the public doesn’t have to worry about the ground water becoming radioactive.
He stresses that they will be in consultations with the public and organizations every step of the way.
None of the 21-communities have committed to the long-term plan, only that they’re interested in learning more about it.”
