A major study on mercury poisoning in the Grassy Narrows has been presented to residents of that First Nation.
Patricia Sellers was given the task of compiling all available research on pollution from the Dryden Paper mill in the 1970’s.
She says her report doesn’t contain any new research, but does outline where there are gaps in scientific research and some of the next steps that should be taken.
Sellers says she has 40 main recommendations for the provincial government dealing with everything from human and ecological health, to education and awareness and research initiatives.
Sellers admits there have been dozens of studies done on the mercury situation in Grassy Narrows, but they have been hap-hazard and not necessarily well coordinated.
She says her report also identifies gaps in research about mercury pollution in the English and Wabigoon River system.
