Residential Complex Supporting Local Patients

A more affordable option for anyone needing to stay in Winnipeg for a medical appointment or treatment.

A “Port In the Storm” is trying to promote its residential complex in the heart of downtown Winnipeg, between the Health Sciences Center and the St. Boniface Hotel.

Executive Director Stacy Grocholski addressed Dryden Rotary on Wednesday and she says they have 14-units available for either long or short term rental.

She says they’ve been around for the past five years, yet many people don’t know about their service.

Grocholski does recommend that people book in advance, but often they can find accommodations for patients needing a place to stay on short notice.

Cancer Survivor and Volunteer Lawrence Praa also spoke to Rotary members.

Praa says patients often can’t afford to stay in a hotel and want a place that feels like home.

He says the “Port in the Storm” was his home away from home, noting it was a clean and friendly place for him and his family.

Praa notes they don’t receive government funding, stressing they rely on donations to keep the complex operational.

About 17% of their clientele come from northwestern Ontario.
