Sandy Lake Man Acquitted

The Supreme Court of Canada has acquitted a Northern Ontario Man accused of killing his 4-year-old foster child.
The Small child named K.M. died in June of 2000 of multiple blunt traumas to the head, just two months after coming into foster care at the Sandy Lake First Nation.
By a 6-1 margin, the Supreme Court concluded that the jury was inconsistent when it acquitted the foster father, of the lesser charge of manslaughter by failing to provide the necessities of life, but found him guilty of the more serious charge of manslaughter by criminal negligence.
The Justice in the case said the verdicts rendered at trial were inconsistent and that the respondent’s conviction of manslaughter by criminal negligence must be overturned.
The child’s foster mother pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the boy’s death, which followed repeated physical abuse over several weeks.
