The busiest forest fire season in more than 50-years has officially come to an end.
1,330 forest fires burned 632,533 hectares of land in Ontario.
The 10-year average is 1,116 fires and 76,845 hectares.
In Northwestern Ontario, the Ministry of Natural Resources is reporting 908-fires, covering 629,391 hectares.
Information Officer Debbie McLean says most of the hectares burned were the result of 5 or 6 fires.
The two largest fires were Sioux Lookout #35 and Sioux Lookout #70, both of them over 100,000 hectares each.
McLean says it cost the Government about $230-million to fight the fires.
That’s compared to $99.7-million in 2010.
Despite the valiant efforts of firefighters, 7-structures were lost due to fires and power lines went out in the Red Lake area.
The MNR did receive the help of 1,000 firefighters and 20-waterbombers from other Provinces this season.
McLean notes there’s still more work to be done as 15-active fires continue to burn in Northwestern Ontario.
