This morning, retired RCMP officer and Canada’s Sergeant-At-Arms, Kevin Vickers is being hailed as a hero.
Vickers, 58, shot and killed terrorist suspect Michael Zehaf-Bibeau after Cpl Nathan Cirilo was gunned down on the steps of the National War Memorial in Ottawa. This morning in Parliament, Prime Minister Harper thanked Vickers on behalf of the Nation.
Vickers position as Sergeant-At-Arms is often viewed as largely ceremonial. In fact, he is also the head of security for Parliament. Nine hours after the shooting, Vickers was still at his job, directing security officials. It is reported that he had never drawn his gun during his 29 year career in the RCMP. Vickers rose from the rank of Constable to Superintendent during his career.
