Sioux Lookout is putting out a call for volunteers after that community took in 80 evacuees from the community of Mishkeegogamang First Nation (aka Osnaburgh)late Tuesday night due to a large forest fire burning in that area.
At the moment the evacuees are mainly moms and young children who are sleeping on mattresses on the floor at the Recreation Centre. There are also a small group of elders staying at the Sunset Suites. It is expected that another group of 80 or more evacuees could arrive in Sioux Lookout at any time.
Voluntters are need to assist with meals(breakfast, lunch and supper) to be prepared and served at the Royal Canadian Legion. Also to help with registration of evacuees as they come in; entertainment and games for the children and laundry and general assistance.
Donations of food cannot be accepted as all food must be prepared in the kitchen at the Legion due to the safe food handling policies of the Northwestern Health Unit.
Anyone who can assist is asked to call Florence Bailey at 737-4670 ext 2228 at the Sioux Lookout Municipal Office. Her cell phone is 737-9767.
