It’s a gift from one set of Northwestern Ontario students to another.
Sioux Lookout’s Queen Elizabeth District High School has built Kingsway Park elementary school students an outdoor classroom.
Kingsway students from all grades will be enjoying the timber frame structure as part of their curriculum.
Grade 8 student Jordana Van Ginkel says she’s looking forward to being outside the school.
“It’s very nice to have somewhere right on the school grounds, where we can go out there and learn different things every day.”
The timber-framed, open-walled structure was recently unveiled, but Kingsway Principal Darren Lentz explains it will take a couple more weeks until it’s ready for students.
He notes he’s a big fan of taking lessons into the great outdoors.
“Kids just thrive outdoors, and that’s why you’ll see more and more of these popping up around schools, because it’s important to get kids outdoors and build that relationship with the land,” Lentz says.
Queen Elizabeth Construction teacher Matt Culham feels that building the classroom has been a great experience for his students.
“Having students come together, and to build something bigger than just what they can do on their own, is pretty rewarding, it’s something they can be proud of, and it gives back to the community.” (Photo: Colin Redston)
