Sioux Lookout Wants Support For East-West Route

A delegation from Sioux Lookout is in Thunder Bay Thursday to continue its push for an East-West corridor to the Ring of Fire.

The team includes Councillor Calvin Southall and the Economic Development Commission.

Economic Development Manager Vicki Blanchard says will be meeting with industry, First Nations, government and community leaders to discuss infrastructure developments.

Blanchard says they want to be proactive not reactive when it comes to supporting First Nations in the far north.

She adds collaborations and partnerships are key to move the project forward.

Blanchard says they want to work with all levels of government to see economic opportunities come to fruition.

Last August, Premier Kathleen Wynne announced the province would support the construction of an all-season access road into the far north extending from Highway 599 and the community of Pickle Lake.

Blanchard notes they have partnered with Pickle Lake on a vision for the corridor and servicing northern First Nations.

She says a lot of time and money has been invested to ensure they are the “Hub of the North”, noting Sioux Lookout is the foundation for growth in the north.
