The province is dropping the price of Drive Clean emission tests by $5.
The new test fee will be $30 starting on April 1st.
After 12 years in deficit due to start-up costs, Drive Clean went into a $19-million surplus after 2011.
The government says the new rate will ensure that they aren’t taking in more money than it costs to run the program.
According to the Ontario Medical Association, smog contributes to 9,500 premature deaths each year.
Repairs made to cars and trucks as a result of Drive Clean tests reduce smog emissions by more than one-third.
The emissions tests are mandatory for vehicles at least seven years old.
