Northwestern Ontario continues to have higher smoking rates than the rest of the province.
That’s according to a new Cancer Quality Council of Ontario report.
The document indicates the high rates have an impact on the regional health care system as roughly 30% of cancer deaths can be linked to smoking.
In 2014-2015, 25% of adults in northwestern Ontario were daily or occasional smokers, in comparison to the Ontario average of 18%.
The report also shows that the region has higher incidence rates of lung cancer at 85 new cases per 100,000 people.
The provincial mark is 70-cases.
