Society of Professional Engineers Questions Design Of Nipigon River Bridge

The CEO of the Society of Professional Engineers thinks the province should examine a variety of factors in the design and construction of the Nipigon River Bridge.

The structure faltered on Sunday after expansion bolts and girders broke.

Sandro Perruzza says it’s very early in the investigation and he doesn’t want to speculate.

However, he notes the engineering company that was hired to do the project is based out of Spain.

Perruzza adds it was a partnership with a reputable Canadian company.

He is suggesting the province takes a look at how it awards its projects and re-think the lower bidder philosophy.

As for the investigation into the cause, he suggests probing what went wrong with the bolts is a good place to start.

Perruzza says if the bolts were fit for the project, he questions if there was any damage to them during transportation.

Perruzza adds investigators should also look into whether materials were ready for extreme weather conditions.

He notes the north does have difficult weather conditions that could lead to contraction.

Perruzza says they also need to look at whether the bolts were designed properly, constructed with metal that met specifications and correctly installed.
