Sol Mamakwa Questions Future Of Ring Of Fire

The first ever MPP for the Kiiwetinoong Riding has serious doubts on the province’s plan for the Ring of Fire.

Speaking at Queen’s Park, Sol Mamakwa asked Premier Ford if he’s ready to sit down and meet with Indigenous leaders to discuss the massive mining development.

Mamakwa says the only way the government can take action is if they open dialogue with impacted First Nations.

The NDP member says Doug Ford once promised to “get on a bulldozer himself to get the Ring of Fire underway” and “it’s time to stop talking and start doing”.

However, Mamakwa stresses from the perspective of First Nations, “the only way you can start doing, is to start talking”.

He questions if progress will ever be made.

Meantime, Mamakwa is questioning the Ford government and its commitment towards reconciliation efforts.

Mamakwa says merging the Ministry of Indigenous Relations with Northern Development, Mines and Energy is a step backwards, calling it a “part-time” Ministry.
