St. John’s School In Red Lake Receives Spirit Bear

St. John’s School in Red Lake now has its very own spirit bear.

All five schools in the Kenora Catholic District School Board have received the spirit bear.

Alecia Cox is the Jordan’s Principle Navigator for the school board and says the weighted teddy bears stand for Truth and Reconciliation because a similar bear was at all the Truth and Reconciliation hearings.

“So ours are blue in support of Jordan’s Principle,” explains Cox.

“They weigh approximately three pounds, so they definitely provide some comfort not just for children, but for adults as well.”

Cox is hoping that each school will bring the bear to all their special events.

“Each school is going to be able to decide how they are going to utilize that bear…if they keep in one space or if they rotate it around classrooms. They’re going to have to come up with that. Each school will involve the bear and make it part of their family, their community.”

Cox says each school will get to name their bear and dress it up in regalia.
