State Of Emergency In Wapekeka First Nation

A remote northern First Nation is reporting a suicide crisis and a state of emergency.

Leanne Nicholson is a Dryden-based social worker and she is currently in Wapekeka.

Nicholson was originally dispatched to the community in January following the suicide of two, 12-year-old girls.

Last week another 12-year-old girl took her own life.

Nicholson says it’s a sad situation and she is trying to help the community heal.

She says because there’s a lot of inter-generational trauma, parents are having a difficult time nurturing their children.

Nicholson says there seems to be a disconnect between parents and their children and quite often people are feeling lost.

She is trying to use art classes with youth to help them cope with crisis.

Wapekeka is a community of 300-400 people and is located about 500-kilometres north of Dryden.

The community’s band manager has stated the deaths are a part of a suicide pact discovered last Summer.
