Still Time To Get Your Flu Shot

Ontario’s top medical health officer says it’s not too late to get your flu shot.

Dr. David Williams says it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to completely take hold, but he says the flu season is still young.

He says most cases are seen in December and January, but notes the season can go as late as March.

Dr. Williams says the province hasn’t seen any big spike in cases yet.

The flu season hit northwestern Ontario earlier than usual this year.

He says with so many of us travelling, shopping or going to parties this time of year, the risk of being exposed to the flu is high, and the shot can help you avoid getting seriously ill and spreading the flu to others.

Dr. Williams says the vaccine is safe, free and readily available in our area, dispelling the myth that you can catch the bug by getting a shot.

He adds this year’s vaccine appears to be a good match for the flu strains making the rounds.

Dr. Williams adds the vaccine was carefully formulated to protect against four current strains based on recommendations from the World Health Organization.

You can get your shot from your health care provider, the Northwestern Health Unit and most pharmacies.
