Study Looks at Joining Manitoba

It’s a popular topic around the coffee shops and water coolers in
Northwestern Ontario, and now an economic study has found some merits to the
Region breaking away and joining Manitoba.
The report examines 3 options for the area, a union with Manitoba, maintaining the staus quo or Regional Government.
Co-author Herb Emery says there would be an economic tradeoff to any
political gains.
Emery says if the merger scenario seems to offer “a big
win” politically for the region, the national equalization system would
likely offset those gains.
Kenora-Rainy River MPP Howard Hampton says many people blame the
Provincial Liberal Government for high electricity prices that have resulted
in massive layoffs in the forestry sector.
