The Municipality of Sioux Lookout is coming off of a successful Women’s Symposium titled “Engaging Diverse Voices”.
Councillor Yolaine Kirlew says the goal of the recent event was to engage Indigenous and immigrant women in a bid to get them interested and involved in local politics.
Kirlew says they hope to increase women’s participation in local government to at least 30% by 2026.
Kirlew says they also looked at four specific areas at the conference; community, political involvement, cultural and the economy.
The event was held to celebrate the end of the two-year Diverse Voices for Change program by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
